3rd March 1915  Who’s Who  in  the  4th Gordons

The 4th Gordon  Highlanders  are  almost  entirely  Officered  by  representatives  of  well-known Aberdeen families.

Lt Col

Ogilvie:

who has been long associated with the Territorial force is a partner in the firm of Messrs Thomas Oliver & Son, Wholesale warehousemen,  Aberdeen.

Major

G  A  Smith

is a Solicitor in Aberdeen, and Clerk to the Garloch District Committee. (Killed in action 28 July 1918)

Capt

M’Clintock

served in the Boer War of 1902 and took part in the operations in Orange River Colony, and also served in the Transvaal.

Lyon

is a Son of Sir Alexander Lyon, formerly Lord Provost of the City.

L  Mackinnon

is an advocate and Son of Mr Lachlan Mackinnon, advocate  Aberdeen.

C  D  Peterkin

is also an advocate in Aberdeen, and a Son of the late Mr Henry Peterkin, solicitor.   (Wounded September 1915)

A  M  Wilson

is likewise a graduate in law, and a son of ex-Lord Provost Wilson (Wounded  21 April 1915)

C  Read

is a Son of Mr Walter A Read, C.A. Aberdeen.  Capt Read’s 3 brothers are all on active service, one in the West Lancashire Engineers (TF),one in the Scottish Horse, and one in the Royal Field Artillery.(Wounded 25 Sept 1915 + July 1916)

E W H Brander

who is well known as a student of Shakespeare’s plays, is a graduate in law, associated with the firm of Brander & Cruickshank  advocates, in which his father is senior partner.

J G Hopkinson

is factor for the Drumtochty estates, and a brother of Lt A D Hopkinson, who is also an Officer in the 4th Gordons.

J  I   Watson

is a graduate in Arts of Aberdeen University, and was a medical student when the war broke out.   He is a Son of Rev. John Watson, Carden Place  Aberdeen. (Wounded 25 September 1915)

D  S  P  Douglas

is a Son of Mr David Douglas, Managing Director of Richards Ltd  (Wounded 16 June 1915 )

Lt

R  D  Coutts

belongs to Edinburgh, and at the commencement of the war was  an official in the Lands Valuation Department  in Aberdeen   (Killed in action  September 1915)

D  Falconer

is a brother of  Mr Harvey Falconer, of Messrs John Falconer & Co  Aberdeen.

W  L  Cook

is a Son of Mr G M Cook, shipowner, Aberdeen, and a member of the firm John Cook & Son. (Wounded 9 June 1915)

Ian A Clarke

is a Son of Mr John Clark, Chanonry.  Lt Clarke, who is  well known  as a fine athlete, won his Rugby Blue at Oxford.  A few years ago he held the Scottish Amateur Hurdles Championship.He is a forestry student.  (Wounded 16 June 1915)

is a Son of the late Sheriff Henderson Begg. He is today gazetted temporary Lt (Killed in action 23 July 1916)

C  R  Brander

is a brother of Capt E W H Brander. (Wounded September 1915)

2 Lt

M’Laren  Calder

is a Son of the late Rev. John Calder of Crimond, and a grandson of the late Rev. Peter M’Laren, Fraserburgh.  Lt Calder was a student at Fettes College  Edinburgh, and on the outbreak of war gave up his studies and obtained a Commission in the Gordons.  He distinguished himself in several branches of athletics.(Wounded 20 April 1915 + July 1916)

is a Son of  Mr William  Mackinnon, advocate & stockbroker in Aberdeen (Wounded  9 June 1915)

Crombie

is a Son of the late Mr J W Crombie, MP for Kincardinshire. (Died of wounds  23 April 1917)

G G Nichol

is a Son of  Mr Gordon Nichol,  C.E.  Aberdeen.

A  R  Henderson

was formerly Colour-Sgt in U Company, and resides at Desswood Place, Aberdeen (Killed in action September 1915)

A  D  Hopkinson

Brother of Capt J G Hopkinson, also of the 4th Gordons. (Wounded  9 April + 7 June 1915)

C  W  Gibbon

belongs to a well-known Aberdeen and Ceylon  family of that name.

2 Lt

J   Morrison

is a Son of Mrs Alexander Morrison  63 Queen’s Road, and a nephew of Mrs Joseph Ogilvie. Lt Morrison is on the staff ofMessrs Walker & Duncan,  Civil Engineers,  Aberdeen. (Killed in action  September 1915)

N  C  S  Down

is an Englishman and obtained his Commission recently.  He is today gazetted temporay Lt.

is a Canadian, hailing from Toronto.(Wounded October 1915)

was formerly a non-commissioned Officer in the Royal Engr’s.
